US President Joe Biden, reacting to the Senate acquittal of former US President Donald Trump, said while the final vote did not lead to a conviction, “the substance of the charge is not in dispute. “Tonight, I am thinking about those who bravely stood guard that January day. Iآ‘m thinking about all those who lost their lives, all those whose lives were threatened, and all those who are still today living with terror they lived through that day,” he noted in a statement issued Saturday evening.

He added he was also thinking of those who demonstrated the courage to protect the integrity of “our democracy …. before and after the election.” Biden stressed “this sad chapter in our history has reminded us that democracy is fragile. That it must always be defended. That we must be ever vigilant. That violence and extremism have no place in America.”

He continued it was the duty and responsibility of the American people and their leaders to defend the truth and to defeat the lies. The US Senate voted 57-43 acquitting Trump for inciting the January 6 Capitol riot. The House of Representatives had voted on January 13 to impeach Trump for “incitement of insurrection” for the Capitol riot that endangered hundreds of lawmakers and left five people dead, including a police officer, whereas over 200 people have been charged in connection with the riot.
