Belgian Prime Minister Sophie Wilmes on Wednesday announced that the mandatory quarantine period for coronavirus in Belgium will be reduced from 14 days to one week starting from 1st of October. Speaking at a press conference after the meeting of the National Security Council, she said people who show Covid-19 symptoms still have to contact their doctor. From the 1st of October, face masks will only be mandatory in crowded places, as well as on public transport.

“It is useless to make masks compulsory anytime, anywhere,” Wilmes said, calling on local authorities to comply with the change, and not keep the rule in unnecessary places. Attendance at events indoors is limited to 200 people, outdoors to 400. She said the basic rules remained the same. People should wash their hands regularly, preferably pursue activities out of doors, protect the vulnerable, keep a distance of 1.5 metres. “You can see everybody, as long as you keep your distance. If that’s not possible, wear a face covering. Seeing more than ten people at one time, children not included, isn’t possible,” she said. Meanwhile, Belgium is now among the six worst affected European countries with 132 infections per 100,000 inhabitants on average, according to data released by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
