The Ethiopian delegation has arrived into the country to discuss the modalities of signing the memorandum of understanding with government agencies on the issue of recruitment of domestic workers from Addis Ababa.
Bassam Al-Shammari, who is specialist in this area told a local Arabic daily that the frequent discrepancy in monthly salaries of domestic workers based on nationality is a fatal mistake that threatens the employment in this sector particularly workers of different nationality work in the same house and receive different monthly salaries.
Al-Shammari stressed on the need to change that policy which is vastly prevalent in determining the monthly salaries of domestic workers according to nationality, which is reflected in the recruitment process in general, and reduces the numbers and opportunities for them to come to Kuwait, stressing that equality in salaries among workers who perform the same work is one of the most important reasons if Kuwait has to streamline employment in this sector so that ‘some’ do not feel neglected or discriminated against.
He said, “Government agencies are deluding citizens by reducing the costs of recruiting domestic workers and their monthly salaries, unaware of the negative repercussions of this matter in the long run, which threatens to stop recruitment completely, especially since local companies and offices will not be able to cover their expenses.”
Regarding the refusal of some to recruit workers from some African nationalities, Al-Shammari mentioned that African workers are similar to their counterparts of other nationalities and that their employers should treat them with kindness and must not underestimate them to avoid any problems.
