The iconic doll that has transformed into a cultural phenomenon. Be it her fashionable attire, dream house and the perfect, Ken, every little girl dreamed of living in her world.
Fans were filled with excitement when it was announced that a live adaption that is directed by Greta Gerwig and starring megastars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken would be releasing on July 21 across the globe.
However that wasn’t the case with the Middle East, with rumors of a delayed release which led to fans speculating whether the movie would be released at all.
The alleged issues that could be the cause of the ban on “Barbie” could be the concerns on cultural sensitivity, gender roles and the some religious, political and social factors.
On Sunday evening, Saudi cinema and entertainment platform MovSto posted a tweet that appeared to clarify that the film won’t be released throughout the region.
“Officially: The movie “Barbie” will not be shown in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, the Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain,” the tweet reads when translated into English.
However, official sources have yet to comment on this information.
