Officials in Karachi announced that at least 11 people were killed and 35 injured, following a fire that broke out in a section of a mall in the commercial capital of Pakistan.
Shahid Hussein, spokesman for the Sheba Organization, which manages rescue equipment, told AFP that “rescue personnel recovered 11 bodies” from under the rubble.
He added that 35 people were injured, including seven seriously, noting that “at least 40 people were rescued.”
For his part, Shabbir Ali, spokesman for the local Ministry of Health, confirmed to Agence France-Presse the provisional toll.
The fire broke out on the fourth floor of the six-storey shopping center in the coastal city.
Hussein explained that the fire broke out due to an electrical short circuit in one of the generators, which quickly engulfed two floors of the shopping center.
