The Arab Parliament on Wednesdays confirmed the necessity of supporting and compensating victims of terrorism, as part of fighting terrorism and eliminating its impact.

This came in a statement by the Deputy Chairman of the Parliament’s Legislative, Legal and Human Rights Committee Shatha Al-Naqbi, the Parliament said in a statement. During the first joint meeting between the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the UN Office for Counterterrorism, and the UN Office on Crime, Al-Naqbi stressed some general principles of discussing issues of compensating victims of terrorist operations in all legal, economic, social, and financial and health aspects.

She referred to the comprehensive document to combating terrorism and extremism adopted by the Arab Parliament in 2018, which recommends guaranteeing care and support for victims of terrorist operations and the establishment of national funds to protect and rehabilitate those victims.

She called for exchanging expertise at national and regional levels on best practices to compensate victims of terrorism. A series of meetings will be organized by the IPU and the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism in order to reach model legislation to support and protect the rights of victims of terrorism and compensate them.
