The extraordinary meeting chaired by the Kuwaiti Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab World Affairs, Minister Plenipotentiary Nasser Al-Qahtani, the League of Arab States called for “engaging in serious international action to end the Ukrainian crisis politically and diplomatically as the best way to address the current situation.”

The message of the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit was read by the Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Secretary-General’s Office Ambassador Hossam Zaki on the situation in Ukraine.

Aboul Gheit stressed the importance of “restoring stability and achieving security for all in light of respect for international law and the Charter of the United Nations,” noting that the General Secretariat is following up with “great concern” the successive developments in Ukraine and their serious military and humanitarian consequences.

He also stressed the need for each party to bear its responsibility and to focus all efforts on sparing civilians the consequences of the deteriorating security situation, stressing the need for all to respect international humanitarian law.

He also stressed the need to “ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to those who need it, especially in light of the continuing influx of Ukrainian refugees to neighboring countries, in light of these dangerous conditions.”

Aboul Gheit believed that “our belonging to the Arab region may make us more aware than others of the destructive effects of wars and the use of military force and their painful consequences and the extremely dangerous negative consequences of that at all levels, especially humanity.”

In this context, he urged “all peace-loving countries and organizations to work quickly in order to stop the escalation and not fuel it, restore dialogue and seek to settle the crisis through indispensable diplomacy in order to avoid the deterioration of the situation and the expansion of the conflict.”
