Representative Alia Al-Khaled submitted a proposal to establish and allocate areas for vertical farms for agricultural production in Wafra. The proposal stated the initiative of the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fisheries to allocate 50-100 square meters in Wafra that will be used in establishing vertical farms for diversified agricultural production. According to the local daily, the project aims to provide food security for the local market and export surplus.

Moreover, the proposal included the use of the vertical farming system to develop the sources of agricultural production and its means, as well as to keep pace with technological and economic development. It also specified that vertical farming provides more production through modern technology, which departs from the traditional pattern, with advantages on local consumption and reducing imports of many agricultural products.

The proposal noted that scientific research published the feasibility of using the vertical farming method in its suitability to the country’s climatic conditions, including the preservation of the environment by not using chemical fertilizers and achieving the preservation of the strategic stock of groundwater due to its low need for water consumption.

Moreover, the report mentioned that the initiative of the Authority is to prepare and offer areas of land for one or more companies specialized in establishing vertical agricultural production farms with modern technological systems to achieve production for the local market and surplus export.
