Foreign Minister Sheikh Salem Al-Sabah has expressed Kuwait’s strong denunciation of the ruling recently issued by the Federal Supreme Court in Iraq regarding the Khor Abdullah Agreement concluded between Kuwait and Iraq in 2012.

In confirmation of what was published by Al-Rai, Sheikh Salem Al-Sabah revealed in a statement to Kuwait TV that his visit to New York was for one specific purpose, which was to meet with his Gulf counterparts, the foreign ministers of friendly countries, and officials at the United Nations, to express Kuwait’s position.

“We hope that the Iraqi government will take the necessary steps to address this matter and respect Kuwait’s sovereignty, the sanctity of its lands, and the agreement between the two countries.

He added, “Kuwait denounces the content of the ruling, which included a historical narration full of fallacies. We are surprised and deplore the inclusion in a ruling of a purely technical agreement of a lengthy historical narration of Kuwait extending from the year 1546 until the year 1990, and here we are, after 30 years and more, hearing the same language from the Iraqi side, and this is “Something we condemn in the strongest terms.”

He considered that there was an attempt to overthrow the ratification of the agreement, which was carried out by the legislative authorities of the two countries and was deposited in the United Nations.

He stressed that Kuwait’s position was supported and understood by all the officials he met, hoping that the Iraqi government would “take the necessary steps to address this matter and respect Kuwait’s sovereignty, the sanctity of its lands, and the agreement concluded between the two countries.”
