Military spending in Kuwait decreased in 2022 by 11 percent, to reach $8.2 billion, compared to 2021. A study by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) stated that Kuwait fell from 26th place to 30th in the list of the 40 highest military spending countries in 2022.

Kuwait’s military spending of its GDP amounted to 4.5 percent in 2022 compared to 3.3 percent in 2013, ranking ninth in the world in military burden (meaning military spending as a share of GDP), while its share of global military spending reached 0.4 percent, reports Al-Rai daily.

The report indicated that 6 Arab countries are among the top 10 countries in the world in terms of spending on military equipment topped by Saudi Arabia, which spent 7.4 percent of its GDP on the army, followed by Qatar (7.0 percent), Oman (5.2 percent), and Jordan (4.8 percent), Algeria (4.8 percent) and Kuwait (4.5 percent).

According to estimates, the total military spending of the countries of the Middle East reached $ 184 billion in 2022, which represents an increase of 3.2 percent from 2021, but a decrease of 1.5 percent from 2013.

Military spending in Europe in 2022 recorded its highest level since the end of the Cold War, with a record increase in more than three decades, reaching $2.240 billion, equivalent to 2.2 percent of global GDP.
