About 700 Filipino expat workers were deported in the past three months, Alrai Media reported, either at the workers’ own expense or at the expense of the Philippine Embassy. The report said that the number of Filipino workers who escaped from their sponsors has declined since the closure of the shelter center.

According to the report, the deportations were carried out by the General Administration of Deportation, and that about 500 of the workers were deported after they were detained in a shelter center that was rented by the Philippine Embassy. The remaining 130 workers were detained in a government shelter due to travel impediments, such as pending legal complaints filed against them.

In addition, the Ministry of Interior does not charge sponsors for the cost of the workers’ deportation tickets, which range between 250 to 350 Kuwaiti dinars, as a step taken to protect the rights of sponsors, considering that the workers had breached their contracts by absconding. In this case, the workers either pay for their own tickets or the embassy pays for them. If the workers do not pay for their tickets, they will remain in detention.
