Intensive traffic campaigns organized by the General Traffic Department (GTD) have revealed the extent of the serious traffic violations committed by motorists which prompted the GTD to study ways to contain recklessness.

According to what security sources told Al-Rai, “there is a trend to issue a circular to stop the ‘conciliation order’ in the case of serious violations and recklessness for a month, and to refer all violators to the traffic court to deter them, especially since a majority of them have been committing grave violations repeatedly.

The security sources said the phenomenon of grave violations was on the increase and pointed out that during the past ten months, 1,808 juveniles were arrested including teenagers between the ages of 13 and 16, who were caught driving without license and putting at risk the lives of other road users.

Security sources revealed the statistics issued by the GTD show the number of traffic citations issued during about 10 months (from January 1 last to November 2, this year), was 2,793,140 traffic, most of them serious violations such as carelessness, recklessness, speeding, crossing the traffic light, and parking in ‘No Parking’ zone.
