Qatar announces 1,993 new COVID-19 cases, 3 deaths

Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health on Friday announced 1,993 new confirmed coronavirus cases, with 5,205 people having recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours.

This brings the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 52,907 of which there are 32,267 active cases under treatment while the recoveries have passed the 20,000 mark.

The ministry also announced 3 new deaths from the virus, which takes the country’s death toll to 36. It added that the three new deaths belong to people aged 84, 48 and 65 years, who were suffering from chronic diseases and received treatment in intensive care.

The ministry noted that the reason for the large increase in the number of recoveries is attributed to implementing the latest international recommendations regarding criteria for recovering from Covid-19 infection, which was approved by the Ministry of Public Health.

Over the last 24 hours, the ministry also recorded 20 new patients being admitted to intensive care due to the virus, bringing the total number of cases currently in intensive care to 216.

The Qatari health authorities revealed that infections doubled due to family gatherings and visits between friends and extended families, and people ignoring the preventive measures recommended by the concerned authorities; the most important of which is staying at home and maintaining social distance.

Qatar has been ramping up its efforts to test more people, and has conducted a total of 212,897 coronavirus tests, after 5,864 new tests over the past 24 hours.
