New traffic law looms as GTD seizes 29 vehicles, arrests 48 wanted individuals

In the final statistics before the new traffic law takes effect on April 22, the General Traffic Department reported 56,708 traffic violations during intensified road campaigns from April 5 to 11. The authorities referred 110 juveniles to the Juvenile Prosecution for driving without licenses, summoned vehicle owners, and sent 39 serious violators to the traffic police station.

The campaign also led to the impoundment of 29 vehicles and motorcycles, the arrest of 48 wanted individuals, and the seizure of 46 vehicles tied to breach of trust or theft cases. Two individuals were arrested in an abnormal condition, while five others were referred to the Drug Control Department for similar offenses.

Traffic officers dealt with 1,480 accidents during the week, including 278 resulting in injury or death.
For Q1 2025, the department recorded 1,049,382 violations. Speeding accounted for 332,536 cases, followed by 70,708 seatbelt violations, 30,190 mobile phone violations, and 24,738 for running red lights. Traffic-related deaths reached 65 in the first quarter.
