The Times Kuwait Report
The Embassy of Italy in Kuwait officially resumed its cultural programme with a spectacular performance by Mezzotono, an internationally acclaimed Italian vocal ensemble, at the Yarmouk Cultural Centre – Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah.
The concert, held on November 1, marked the beginning of celebrations for Italy’s National Day and the Day of Italian Unity and Armed Forces. It also represented the reopening of the Embassy’s cultural activities following an extended interruption caused by recent regional developments.

Addressing the gathering, Italian Ambassador to Kuwait H.E. Lorenzo Morini welcomed the audience and expressed his pleasure at seeing so many friends and supporters joining the Embassy for the occasion.

He thanked Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah and its staff for their hospitality and valuable support in organising the event, while also acknowledging the dedication and professionalism of the Italian Embassy team.
The Ambassador described the performance as an exceptional opportunity to introduce Kuwaiti audiences to Mezzotono, one of Italy’s most successful a cappella ensembles, performing in Kuwait for the first time.
Often described as “Ambassadors of Italian Music Around the World”, the ensemble has performed at prestigious festivals and theatres in more than 70 countries across five continents.
An orchestra without instruments

Mezzotono captivated audiences with its remarkable ability to recreate the sound of an entire orchestra using only five voices. Blending Italian musical heritage with jazz, pop, humour and theatrical flair, the ensemble demonstrated how vocal artistry can transform familiar musical styles into an extraordinary live experience.
Explaining the origins of a cappella music, Ambassador Morini noted that the expression derives from the Italian term meaning “in the style of the chapel”, originally referring to sacred choral music performed without instrumental accompaniment.
Over time, the tradition evolved beyond religious settings, embracing diverse forms of musical expression, from classical madrigals and barbershop quartets to contemporary rap and beatboxing.
Modern a cappella performances, he explained, go far beyond traditional choir singing, with performers recreating the harmony, basslines, percussion and melodies of an entire orchestra through their voices.

Encouraging the audience to experience the music in a different way, the Ambassador invited guests to close their eyes during the opening song and listen carefully to the layers of sound, identifying the rhythm, bass and harmony while remembering that no instruments or prerecorded tracks were being used.
He also highlighted the ensemble’s distinctive approach to audience participation, noting that the public becomes an active part of the performance.
Music that brings people together

The evening showcased the power of music to connect cultures and bring people together, with Mezzotono combining technical brilliance, humour and audience interaction to create an engaging musical experience.
The performance reflected the Embassy’s commitment to strengthening cultural ties between Italy and Kuwait through artistic exchange and shared experiences. The Embassy’s decision to resume its cultural programme with an Italian musical performance underscored the importance of maintaining cultural connections and fostering friendship between the two countries.
