MC members annual leave postponed to fast-track key development projects

Minister of State for Municipal Affairs, Abdullatif Al-Mishari, has requested the postponement of the annual leave for Municipal Council members, originally scheduled for the end of July through August. The decision comes amid urgent plans to review and approve several new development projects before the conclusion of the 13th legislative term.
A government source told Al Jarida that the postponement is driven by the need to expedite the approval and allocation of major projects prepared by Kuwait Municipality. These projects span housing, economic and investment initiatives, infrastructure, and updated municipal regulations—all of which will be submitted to the Council for discussion within the next two months.
Minister Al-Mishari commended the cooperation of council members, who agreed to defer their break in order to prioritize national development and respond swiftly to government agency needs. Their commitment, he noted, reflects a shared dedication to pushing forward Kuwait’s development agenda.
Under Article 15 of Law No. 33 of 2016, the Municipal Council is entitled to a 10-month annual session, with at least one meeting every two weeks. Extraordinary sessions can be held at the request of the Minister, Council Chairman, or five members, provided the topics are limited to the agenda issued with the invitation.
In a related development, the Capital Governorate Committee, chaired by Dr. Hassan Kamal, approved a donation from Kuwait International Bank to support the beautification and restoration of Abdul Razzaq Gate Tunnel. The donation will fund Tender No. 2023/2024/3 and will also cover supervision of implementation works under Tender No. 2024/2025/7. This follows Cabinet approval granted during its meeting on April 29, 2025.
The donation will now be referred to the Municipal Council for formal approval, in accordance with Article 21, Clause 12 of Law No. 33 of 2016, which allows the Council to accept unconditional donations for municipal purposes following Cabinet consent.
Additionally, the committee approved the Environment Public Authority’s proposal to add a coffee shop to the Salmiya Environment Guards’ Building (Block 1). Meanwhile, the Ministry of Social Affairs’ request to construct a walkway connecting the Qadisiya Cooperative Society’s central market to its vegetable branch remains under review, pending coordination with relevant stakeholders, including the Traffic Department.
