Mangrove cultivation for a greener sustainable future at Jahra Reserve

A thousand mangrove seedlings were planted in the reserve to create awareness about the importance of coastal environment rehabilitation, which is part of United Nations Sustainable Development Plan 2030 and Kuwait Vision 2035.

The Public Environment Authority confirmed today, Saturday, its continuation of mangrove cultivation campaigns in the Jahra Reserve to confront climate change and spread awareness about the importance of increasing the green area in the country.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Zaidan, The Deputy Director General for Technical Affairs at the Authority, told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) during the mangrove cultivation event in the Jahra Reserve that the Authority is keen on community cooperation between state institutions and the private sector, in addition to volunteer teams and initiators from civil society.

Al-Zaidan added that a thousand mangrove seedlings were planted in the reserve in coordination and cooperation with the Public Authority for Youth and the “Eco” incubator for environmental and renewable energy projects.

This was in addition to the participation of volunteer teams, including the Kuwaiti “Al-Darwaza” volunteer team, The “Al-Sa’i” environmental team, and the “We Plant It and Protect It” team.

He stressed that this step comes within the framework of spreading awareness of the importance of environmental rehabilitation and greening and enhancing environmental awareness support for state institutions and community members.

This is being done in order to achieve the goals of the United Nations Sustainable Development Plan 2030 and Kuwait Vision 2035.

Regarding the advantages of mangrove cultivation, Al-Zaidan explained that it has positive effects in combating climate change and protecting coasts from erosion, in addition to enriching biodiversity and its natural resources, as well as purifying water from pollutants, which contributes in achieving a better and more sustainable future.

Al-Zaidan also pointed out that these activities are meant to confront the global challenges related to climate change and environmental degradation by encouraging plant cultivation and rationalizing the use of natural resources.This is primarily aimed in achieving sustainability, reduce pollution and raise the quality of life in the country.

On a cautions note, he concluded that the nature reserves have become necessary to enhance the quality of urban areas against environmental and climatic changes, as these contribute in improving air quality, reduce emissions, and thereby create a safer and more sustainable environment.
