Lord Iain McNicol takes charge as UK’s Trade Envoy to Kuwait

In his new role, Lord McNicol will leverage his experience, expertise, and knowledge to open new markets for British businesses and attract investment to the United Kingdom.

H.E. Belinda Lewis, British Ambassador to Kuwait, said the bilateral trade between the UK and Kuwait reached £5.9 billion in the twelve months to June 30, 2024—arise of 14.8% (£762 million) from the previous year.

The British government has formed a new ‘global growth team’ of UK Trade Envoys to boost exports and investment. Lord Iain McNicol of Kilbride has been appointed Trade Envoy to Kuwait, Jordan, and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Jonathan Reynolds, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, said that “Trade and investment are key to delivering economic growth. That’s why I have launched a new team of Trade Envoys, who will use their experience, expertise, and knowledge to unlock new markets around the world for British businesses and drum up investment into the UK.

This announcement comes as the UK prepares to launch its new Trade Strategy in spring, prioritizing rebuilding relations with the European Union (EU) and seizing opportunities in new markets.

Alongside bolstering exports, attracting investments, and removing trade barriers, the government is also resuming trade talks with Free Trade Agreement partners, including the GCC, Switzerland, and South Korea.”

H.E. Belinda Lewis, British Ambassador to Kuwait, and Naz Demir, Country Director for Trade at the British Embassy in Kuwait, stated that “This is an exciting time for our bilateral trade and investment partnership, with UK-Kuwait trade reaching £5.9 billion in the 12 months to June 30, 2024—an increase of 14.8% (£762 million) from the previous year.

We are also continuing negotiations on the UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement, and the United Kingdom remains a highly popular destination for both private and institutional Kuwaiti investors.”

We warmly welcome Lord McNicol to his new role and look forward to exploring further opportunities to strengthen our close economic ties with Kuwait.”
