Leadership-directed Kuwait-Iraq joint team given 30 days to address outstanding issues

Kuwait and Iraq have agreed to establish a joint working group to review outstanding bilateral issues and develop a clear roadmap for addressing them, marking a structured step in efforts to strengthen relations between the two neighboring countries.

The agreement followed a meeting between His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The decision reflects the two countries’ stated commitment to addressing outstanding issues through dialogue and coordination, guided by what they described as a spirit of brotherhood, good neighborliness and shared interests. Under the agreement, the joint Kuwaiti-Iraqi working group will review the outstanding files, develop a roadmap for addressing them and submit joint recommendations to the leaderships of both countries within no more than 30 days.

The working group will meet alternately in Kuwait and Baghdad on an ongoing basis until its mission is completed, giving the process a direct and continuing channel for bilateral coordination. Both sides affirmed their full support for the group and their commitment to completing its task in a manner that contributes to closing outstanding files and opening what they described as a new phase of cooperation and partnership between the two countries.

The agreement places the resolution of outstanding issues within a defined bilateral mechanism, while linking the process to the broader objective of strengthening Kuwait-Iraq relations and serving the interests of both peoples.
