Kuwait’s groundwater production capacity reaches 142 million gallons per day

The latest statistical report from the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy has revealed that Kuwait’s current groundwater wells production capacity stands at approximately 142 million imperial gallons per day. In comparison, the maximum daily consumption recorded during the summer of 2023 was around 52.571 million imperial gallons.

In its efforts to enhance production capacity and meet the growing demand for water, the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy has outlined future programs aimed at increasing groundwater production.

The most notable of these initiatives includes the creation of new rights to invest in low-salinity groundwater in areas located northwest of the Shagaya fields, as well as in the northwest and northeast of the Umm Qadeer field.

The Ministry also highlighted the development of the Sulaibiya field, part of the Atraf field, which comprises 16 wells with a production capacity of 6.3 million imperial gallons per day. This field has been operational to supply low-salinity water for mixing purposes at the Subiya station.

Moreover, the Ministry also stated that the remaining 67 wells in the Atraf field have been completed, with well rooms constructed, iron fences installed, and the well water collection pipe network extended. Additionally, the sites have been supplied with electricity to ensure efficient operation.

These wells were brought into operation in 2010 to boost production capacity by 23.7 million imperial gallons per day, bringing the total number of wells in the Atraf field to 83, with an overall production capacity of 30 million imperial gallons per day.

Water Storage

The Ministry confirmed the establishment of 15 conical towers, each with a capacity of 661,000 imperial gallons (3,000 cubic meters), distributed across various areas of Kuwait.

These towers are designed to maintain consistent pressure in the distribution network and meet peak consumption demands. As a result, the total capacity of the towers for the currently available low-salinity water has reached 9.915 million imperial gallons.

The Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy continues its efforts to develop and expand water projects in Kuwait, with plans to implement several new initiatives to ensure the sustainable provision of fresh water to all citizens.
