Kuwait’s former Oil Minister Imad Al-Atiqi passes away

The former Deputy Prime Minister published more than 80 research papers in fields including engineering, oil refining simulation and control, analysis of derivatives, refining economics, petrochemicals, and chemical processes.

Dr. Imad Mohammad Al-Atiqi, Kuwait’s former Deputy Prime Minister and Oil Minister, passed away Thursday after a long and accomplished career, Al Rai newspaper reported.

During his career, the late Imad Al-Atiqi held several prominent positions. He served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Oil in 2024 and was President of the American University of the Middle East in Kuwait from 2011 to 2018. Between 2003 and 2010, he was the Founding Secretary-General of the General Secretariat of the Council of Private Universities.

Earlier, he served as Dean of the College of Engineering and Petroleum at Kuwait University from 1998 to 2000 and as Director of the Research Department at the same university from 1991 to 1994.

Al-Atiqi was also a member of the Supreme Petroleum Council in Kuwait from 1990 to 2013, where he chaired the Strategies Committee and took part in several technical committees. From 1988 to 1990, he was Director of the Petroleum, Petrochemicals, and Materials Department at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research.

He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Alexandria University in 1978, followed by a Master’s and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania in 1985. He later joined Kuwait University as a faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Al-Atiqi published more than 80 research papers in fields including engineering, oil refining simulation and control, analysis of derivatives, refining economics, petrochemicals, and chemical processes, with his work appearing in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and specialized books.
