Kuwaiti surgeons perform dual remote robotic operations between two hospitals

. . . achievement marks a major advancement in Kuwait’s adoption of cutting-edge surgical robotics and artificial intelligence within its healthcare system

In a pioneering medical milestone, the Ministry of Health announced the successful completion of two concurrent robotic-assisted surgeries performed remotely between the Farwaniya Hospital and the Sabah Al-Ahmad Urology and Kidney Center.

The achievement marks a major advancement in Kuwait’s adoption of cutting-edge surgical robotics and artificial intelligence within its healthcare system, aligning with international standards of excellence.

According to a statement issued Monday, the case involved a male patient in his sixties who presented with symptomatic cholelithiasis. During preoperative diagnostic imaging, an incidental finding revealed a neoplastic lesion in the left kidney, necessitating a laparoscopic cholecystectomy and a radical nephrectomy.

Given the dual surgical indication, both procedures were strategically performed using remote robotic-assisted technology to minimize operative time, reduce intraoperative risks, and optimize postoperative recovery outcomes.

The patient was anesthetized and prepared in the operating theater of the Sabah Al-Ahmad Kidney and Urology Center. Simultaneously, the general surgery team from Al-Farwaniya Hospital, led by Dr. Ahmed Al-Mulla, performed the robotic cholecystectomy via teleoperative control.

As part of the safety protocol, Dr. Abdullah Sultan from Al-Farwaniya Hospital was physically present at the Sabah Al-Ahmad Center to ensure real-time clinical oversight and rapid intervention capability in the event of any intraoperative complications.

Upon completion of the cholecystectomy, the urology team—headed by Dr. Saad Al-Dosari and Dr. Ahmed Al-Marzouq—initiated the robot-assisted radical nephrectomy, maintaining continuous surgical coordination between both sites through advanced telecommunication and imaging systems.

Both procedures were completed successfully with hemodynamic stability achieved throughout, and the patient is currently in stable postoperative condition. The Ministry affirmed that the success of these operations underscores the proficiency of Kuwait’s national surgical teams, the robustness of its digital health infrastructure, and the readiness of its healthcare institutions to integrate next-generation robotic and AI-driven surgical systems.

The Ministry added that this accomplishment represents a continuation of Kuwait’s national strategy to expand the use of robotic and minimally invasive surgery, reinforcing its position as a regional leader in medical innovation and patient-centered care.
