Kuwait strengthens human rights team for upcoming UN review

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with OHCHR, held a technical workshop to enhance the skills of human rights personnel in line with Kuwait’s international commitments.

The workshop is part of Kuwait’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) preparations, highlighting its commitment to promoting and protecting human rights at the national level and its cooperation with relevant international bodies.

On Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a technical cooperation workshop to strengthen the capabilities of the National Standing Committee for Report Preparation ahead of Kuwait’s 2024 Universal Periodic Review (UPR) by the UN Human Rights Council, set for next May, reported Arabic daily Al Jarida.

The workshop, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs—represented by the Human Rights Department—in cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), aimed to build capacity and raise awareness among specialized human rights personnel in line with Kuwait’s international commitments.

It also sought to equip members of the Permanent National Committee responsible for following up on the UPR mechanism with the tools to effectively discuss comprehensive national reports, interact constructively with the review team, and provide clear and thorough responses to recommendations.

The workshop forms part of Kuwait’s preparations for the UPR process—an essential mechanism for the periodic review of human rights records of all UN member states. It also underscores Kuwait’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights at the national level and its cooperation with relevant international bodies.

Experts from the OHCHR delivered comprehensive presentations on the UPR mechanism, covering its objectives, stages, and best practices for presenting national reports and addressing recommendations.
