‘Kuwait Plants’ campaign kicks off new season with focus on community-led greening
The 2026–2027 season of the “Kuwait Plants” campaign has been launched with a renewed focus on community participation, environmental sustainability and locally led efforts to expand green spaces across Kuwait. Head of the UN-Habitat Mission to the State of Kuwait and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries Dr. Ameera Al-Hassan stressed the importance of strengthening community involvement in greening efforts and addressing the impacts of climate change.
The new season was launched through a greening event organized by UN-Habitat in cooperation with the diplomatic corps accredited to Kuwait. In a press statement marking the occasion, Al-Hassan said the participation of more than 60 embassies and international organizations reflects growing interest in environmental sustainability and highlights the importance of international and community partnerships in supporting greening efforts.
She said the campaign aims to highlight Kuwait’s efforts to address the impacts of climate change and its drive toward reducing emissions and achieving carbon neutrality, while raising awareness of the importance of expanding green spaces. The campaign also seeks to support youth, grassroots and volunteer initiatives and engage the wider community and diplomatic corps in greening activities across Kuwait, she added.
Al-Hassan said the participation of ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations in tree-planting activities carries a message of friendship, cooperation and shared environmental responsibility while supporting Kuwait’s efforts toward a more sustainable urban environment.
Referring to the Kuwait-Türkiye Friendship Garden, formerly known as Al-Nile Garden, Al-Hassan stressed that the development of the garden was a 100 percent Kuwaiti effort, both in terms of funding and on-the-ground implementation. She said the fieldwork was carried out by Kuwaiti hands through the efforts of local residents, volunteers and the Enviro Group volunteer team, while the resources and funding that supported the development of the garden were also provided locally from within Kuwait.
UN-Habitat’s role, she explained, focused on awareness-raising, guidance, knowledge transfer and supporting the capacities of volunteers. “We handed them the gardening tools, and they carried out the work with their own hands. Today, the local volunteer team has taken the lead and is responsible for completing the work, further developing the garden and maintaining what has been achieved,” she said.
Al-Hassan said the conclusion of UN-Habitat’s operational role and the transfer of responsibility to the local community represent an important measure of the initiative’s success and sustainability. “Our role today is to return to the garden as visitors and enjoy the results of the greening accomplished by Kuwaiti hands and supported by Kuwaiti resources, while seeing the local community continue to develop what we started together,” she added.
Al-Hassan also expressed pride in the continuity of the “Kuwait Plants” campaign since its launch in 2017 and the expansion it has witnessed over the years, noting that cooperation with Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) since 2019 contributed to broadening the campaign’s reach and supporting its development. “We hope that, after these years, the culture of Kuwait Plants has become firmly rooted in the community and will continue to grow through the efforts of Kuwait’s people, youth, institutions and volunteer initiatives.
“The objective is not merely for the campaign’s name to continue, but for greening and community participation to become a sustainable culture and practice,” she said. Al-Hassan concluded by thanking the ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations participating in the event, as well as local residents, volunteers and the Enviro Group team for their contribution to Kuwait’s greening efforts.
She affirmed that the “Kuwait Plants” campaign would continue to support community and youth initiatives and promote environmental sustainability and volunteerism across Kuwait.
