Kuwait calls for comprehensive UN reform to strengthen multilateralism, global peace

Deputy Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah led Kuwait’s delegation to the UN Security Council’s open debate titled “The United Nations: Reflections on the Future.”

In his address to the UN he emphasized the urgent need to reform the UN system—particularly the Security Council—to enhance its effectiveness, representativeness, and early-warning capabilities.

Marking 80 years since the UN Charter entered into force, Sheikh Jarrah called for stronger adherence to international law and the Charter’s principles without double standards or selectivity.

He identified three pillars for the UN’s future: structural reform, strengthening preventive diplomacy and conflict anticipation, and upholding the Charter’s moral and legal integrity.

He praised the UN’s achievements in developing international law, promoting sustainable development, and conducting peacekeeping operations, while also acknowledging the persistence of global conflicts.

Recalling the Security Council’s historic role in Kuwait’s 1991 liberation, he described it as a defining example of the UN’s ability to uphold justice and legitimacy.

Sheikh Jarrah concluded by affirming Kuwait’s enduring faith in multilateralism and the UN’s mission, urging member states to renew their commitment to its founding principles to build a fairer, more peaceful, and cooperative world.
