KOC lowers gas flaring to record 0.51%, advances oil recovery initiatives

These efforts reflect KOC’s commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility while ensuring long-term production sustainability.

An informed oil source revealed that the gas flaring rate in Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) operations dropped to just 0.51%—well below the annual permissible limit of 0.80% for the 2024–2025 fiscal year.

This reduction was achieved despite a planned 70-day shutdown of the acid gas removal plant at Mina Al-Ahmadi, which typically plays a key role in supplying gas for domestic use and mitigating environmental impact, reports Al-Jarida daily.

The source also disclosed the completion of a study on deep gel conformal treatment in the Bahra Field’s Mawdud reservoir, aimed at enhancing oil recovery.

If the results prove effective in reducing water production, maintaining reservoir pressure, and boosting oil recovery, this could lead to increased output and lower water treatment costs—supporting KOC’s strategy to minimize emissions and produce more sustainable oil.

In another enhanced oil recovery initiative, the source confirmed the successful pilot polymer injection at well UG-0353 in the Umm Gudair Field, targeting the Managish Al-Sari reservoir in West Kuwait.

This long-term test, using highly saline water, aims to streamline operations by reusing existing wells and infrastructure, minimizing water treatment from gathering centers, and accelerating oil extraction by an estimated 3.5% to 4.5%.

These efforts reflect KOC’s commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility while ensuring long-term production sustainability.
