KEPS highlights importance of academic cooperation in environmental research

Jenan Behzad, Secretary-General of the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, underscored the importance of strengthening researchers’ capabilities and fostering collaboration between academic institutions and environmental organizations as a key step toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In a press statement issued Tuesday during a scientific visit organized by the Science Department at the College of Basic Education—affiliated with the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training—in cooperation with the Sabah Al-Ahmad Center for Specialized Environmental Training, Behzad highlighted the aim of the visit: to promote academic cooperation and the exchange of expertise in environmental and applied research, reports Al-Rai daily.

The visit brought a delegation of researchers and faculty members to Kuwait University’s laboratories, where they explored the advanced research infrastructure provided by the National Unit for Environmental Research and Services. Participants were introduced to the unit’s state-of-the-art analytical equipment and its key role in supporting graduate students and environmental researchers.

Behzad explained that the visit showcased active joint research projects conducted in collaboration with local and regional institutions, in addition to the unit’s advisory contributions to shaping Kuwait’s national environmental policies.

She emphasized that integrating academic knowledge with practical environmental expertise remains a strategic priority for the Society. Through its Environmental Center, the Society is committed to supporting specialized environmental training and facilitating cooperation with national research centers, thereby contributing to impactful scientific outcomes.

For his part, Dr. Qais Majeed, Head of the Science Department at the College of Basic Education, stated that the visit aligns with the university’s efforts to provide students and researchers with exposure to cutting-edge environmental research and technologies. He noted that such initiatives enrich applied research and contribute to the development of environmental education curricula.

Dr. Majeed pointed out that the value of these visits extends beyond the lab, saying, “They serve as a bridge between scientific knowledge, classroom learning, and real-world environmental practices and policies.”

He also stressed that scientific research plays a central role in addressing contemporary climate issues. It enables the generation of accurate, data-driven insights into the causes and effects of climate change, helping to craft adaptive solutions, sustainable technologies, and evidence-based environmental policies in key areas such as water, energy, agriculture, and biodiversity.

This collaborative initiative reflects Kuwait’s broader commitment to supporting environmental sustainability through education, research, and institutional partnerships.
