KBA, EU Delegation host seminar on safeguarding the legal profession
'Exploring the International Treaty on the Protection of Lawyers and Its Dimensions'

The Kuwait Bar Association, in collaboration with the European Union Delegation to Kuwait, hosted a high-level seminar “Exploring the International Treaty on the Protection of Lawyers and Its Dimensions” at the headquarters of the Kuwait Bar Association.
The event brought together European and Kuwaiti legal experts to discuss the evolving international framework to protect the legal profession.
The seminar comes in the wake of a landmark decision by the Council of Europe, which adopted the Convention for the Protection of the Legal Profession on March 12, 2025.
This treaty represents the first binding international instrument dedicated to safeguarding the independence, security, and essential role of lawyers in upholding justice and human rights.
The discussions focused on the core principles and objectives of the Convention, highlighting the urgent need to protect lawyers from threats and interference while ensuring their independence in the practice of law.
The participants also explored opportunities for mutual legal cooperation and the exchange of best practices to support the legal profession in Kuwait within the framework of this new treaty.
Adnan Mahmoud Abul, President of the Kuwait Bar Association, in his opening remarks, welcomed the participants and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to defending legal integrity and professional standards.
The keynote address was delivered by H.E. Anne Koistinen, Ambassador of the European Union to Kuwait, who praised the depth of Kuwait-EU relations.
She said, “Our relationship with Kuwait is strong and forward-looking. Deepening ties between our legal communities — through professional exchanges, shared expertise, and joint initiatives — will further strengthen the values we both cherish.
“Kuwait boasts a long-standing tradition of legal professionalism, and the EU Delegation stands ready to facilitate continued cooperation in support of the rule of law,” she said.
The seminar was attended by legal professionals, academics, diplomats, and law students—united in their commitment to upholding international legal standards and advancing the protection of the legal profession worldwide.
