The Iraqi government said it is holding direct talks with the United States to seek exemptions for some Iraqi airports from measures imposed by the US Treasury Department concerning flights operated by Iranian airlines. Iraqi Prime Minister’s Media Office said the measures cover Iranian airline flights to airports in countries across the region, including Iraqi airports.
According to a statement carried by the Iraqi News Agency, Baghdad is seeking exemptions that would allow some flights to resume for humanitarian and civilian purposes. The government said the requested exemptions would cover flights linked to medical treatment, education, religious visits and other civilian interests.
The discussions are being conducted directly between the Iraqi and US sides as Baghdad seeks to address the impact of the measures on selected flights serving Iraqi airports.
