According to a source close to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has prepared a sealed letter listing three potential successors, to be used only in the event of his death or incapacity, or if the Assembly of Experts cannot convene to select a replacement.
The identities, according to Al-Jarida daily. of the selected individuals remain confidential, even from Khamenei’s closest aides.
The decision reflects Tehran’s heightened concerns over a possible Israeli military strike. According to a source in Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the council recommended that senior political and military officials designate multiple replacements to prevent a leadership vacuum, recalling the 12-day war last June, during which Iran lost numerous military leaders. Khamenei’s rapid appointment of successors at that time helped the country regain control and avoid internal chaos.
The source highlighted that the council fears Israeli plans may now target Khamenei himself, which could create major disruption in Iran’s political and military decision-making, given his role as supreme authority.
Khamenei reportedly stresses in daily military meetings that any future war could be decisive, urging intensive preparations for all contingencies.
The Kayhan newspaper, closely aligned with the Supreme Leader, echoed these concerns, warning that a renewed confrontation between Iran, Israel, and the United States is very likely. The publication described the situation as a potential historic turning point with far-reaching consequences for both the region and the world.
