FM affirms Kuwait’s stance on Hormuz Strait as international waterway

Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al- Sabah affirmed on Thursday Kuwait’s firm position regarding the status of the Strait of Hormuz as a natural international waterway in accordance to the rules of international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which guarantees the right of transit passage.

This came in his speech while heading Kuwait’s delegation in participating in the ministerial meeting called by the United Kingdom, with the participation of a number of brotherly and friendly countries, to discuss the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting was held via videoconference.

He said that Kuwait rejects any unilateral measures or attempts to create, impose or consolidate a new status quo that contravenes international law.

Minister Al-Sabah stressed the importance of continuing coordination within a sustainable framework and a clear action plan for procedural tracks, in coordination with international partners, in a manner that ensures effective outcomes that guarantee the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and other vital waterways, and prevent their exploitation by any party or exposure to threats and coercion. – Kuna
