Fishermen renew call to open Kuwait Bay for meid fishing

The head of the Kuwaiti Fishermen’s Union, Abdullah Al-Sarheed, has renewed calls to open Kuwait Bay for fishing mullet (locally known as meid) and other species, under the supervision of relevant authorities and in accordance with established regulations.
Al-Sarheed explained that meid fish typically inhabit shallow waters, and the areas currently designated for fishing by the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fish Resources (PAAFR) do not yield sufficient quantities to meet consumer demand. As a result, meid has been largely absent from market stalls in recent years, according to Al-Rai daily.
He affirmed the fishermen’s readiness to supply both meid and shrimp at affordable prices, starting from the beginning of the fishing season on August 1.
Al-Sarheed praised the efforts of the Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem, for his commitment to food security and his support for the agricultural and fisheries sectors. He expressed optimism about the future, citing a growing understanding among officials regarding the fishermen’s concerns.
He also extended his appreciation to the Ministry of Finance’s Support Committee for standing by the Fishermen’s Union, and to the Coast Guard and Naval Forces, led by Brigadier General Sheikh Mubarak Ali Al-Yousef, for ensuring the safety of fishermen during their trips.
Al-Sarheed acknowledged the support of the PAAFR’s Fisheries Sector for its role in advancing the industry and backing fishermen’s demands. He expressed hope that persistent challenges facing the sector would soon be addressed.
He concluded by urging decision-makers to consider the Union’s development vision for the fishing sector, emphasizing the Union’s willingness to collaborate with all concerned authorities to ensure sustainable marine food security for Kuwait.
