Fire partially damages St. Basil’s Cathedral near Kremlin
No injuries reported, fire swiftly brought under control
A fire that broke out late Friday at the iconic St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow’s Red Square was swiftly extinguished, with no injuries reported, according to Russian state news agency TASS.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
TASS, citing emergency services, reported that the blaze began in the cathedral director’s office and affected an area of approximately 10 square metres before firefighters brought it under control.
Authorities dispatched 10 fire engines to the scene to contain the incident.
St. Basil’s Cathedral, one of Russia’s most recognizable landmarks, is renowned for its distinctive multi-coloured onion domes and its prominent location overlooking Red Square beside the Kremlin.
The historic Orthodox church is a major cultural and tourist attraction in the Russian capital.
Officials said no casualties were reported, and the fire was contained before it could spread to other parts of the centuries-old structure. The exact cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.
