Deputy Mayor seeks updates on “Metro” development and its future feasibility

The Deputy Chairman of the Municipal Council, Khaled Al-Mutairi, submitted a question to the executive body in the Kuwait Municipality, about the Metro project for the State of Kuwait, and inquired about the implementation of the metro route and right of way on the relevant survey plans, and what is meant by the metro right of way?

On a curious note, Al-Mutairi wondered about conducting a study on the initially approved path, transferring existing problems, difficulties and obstacles from existing private or public properties, and developing solutions and proposals, saying; Why was the project left all these years without any measures being taken by the municipality administrations? Was a technical and financial study conducted for the project by the global office and the local office? and What is the content of this study?

Furthermore, Al-Mutairi stated that the Municipality contracted with an international office and another local office to conduct a comprehensive study of the metro route in the State of Kuwait in 2011, and a Municipal Council Resolution No. “MB/N 7/323/13/2011” was issued on June 11, 2011, with initial approval to allocate the proposed metro route.

Since that time, i.e. 13 years ago, no measures have been taken by the Municipality to create an integrated public transportation system and to attract citizens and expatriates from all social and financial levels to use public transportation.

Al-Mutairi pointed out that members had previously submitted a proposal to move the location of the metro station situated south of the 6.5 Ring Road to another suitable location, and to establish a housing project in this area that could accommodate about 3,000 plots, stressing that the Master Plan Department was informed that there is no competent authority for the Metro project, adding, “So what is the technical obstacle to moving the location of the metro station to another suitable alternative location? The responsibility lies with the Master Plan Department, as it is the only competent authority for the project.”
