CBK assets fall 5.3 percent to 8.69 billion dinars in August

Gold assets stood at 31.745 million dinars, while deposits, current accounts and loans with local banks and financial institutions amounted to 80.236 million dinars. Other assets were valued at 160.247 million dinars.

The Central Bank of Kuwait’s total assets fell by 488.5 million dinars, or 5.3 percent, month-on-month to 8.689 billion dinars at the end of August, compared with 9.177 billion dinars at the end of July.

According to data published in the official gazette Kuwait Alyawm, the Central Bank’s assets have declined by about 2.434 billion dinars, or 21.9 percent, since the beginning of 2026, from 11.123 billion dinars at the end of December 2025.

The bulk of the Central Bank’s assets comprised cash balances, accounts, bonds, certificates of deposit, treasury bills and foreign-currency deposits, which stood at 8.416 billion dinars at the end of August, down 761 million dinars from July.

Gold assets stood at 31.745 million dinars, while deposits, current accounts and loans with local banks and financial institutions amounted to 80.236 million dinars. Other assets were valued at 160.247 million dinars.

On the liabilities side, the Central Bank’s paid-up capital stood at 5 million dinars, while the general reserve fund balance reached 1.943 billion dinars. Profits for the fiscal year amounted to 399.321 million dinars, with total liabilities matching assets at 8.689 billion dinars.

Government accounts stood at 1.276 billion dinars, while guarantees against letters of credit amounted to 103.328 million dinars. Local bank accounts and deposits with the Central Bank reached 2.495 billion dinars.

Liabilities to international institutions stood at 54.492 million dinars, the special account at 95.159 million and other liabilities at 336.44 million dinars. Regular accounts amounted to 7.241 billion dinars.

Currency in circulation

The total value of currency in circulation in Kuwait fell by about 45 million dinars, or 2.2 percent, during August to 1.979 billion dinars, compared with 2.024 billion dinars at the end of July. Banknotes accounted for 1.948 billion dinars of the total, down from 1.993 billion dinars in July, while coins stood at 31.219 million dinars compared with 31.297 million dinars.

The 20-dinar banknote remained the largest component of currency in circulation, with a value of 1.074 billion dinars, accounting for about 55 percent of total banknotes.

It was followed by the 10-dinar denomination at 655.446 million dinars, the 5-dinar note at 142.562 million, and the 1-dinar note at 52.213 million dinars. The half-dinar and quarter-dinar notes stood at 12.461 million and 10.868 million dinars, respectively.

Among coins, the commemorative two-dinar denomination stood at 162,240 dinars. The 100-fils coins amounted to 13.633 million dinars, followed by 50 fils at 10.050 million, 20 fils at 4.217 million, 10 fils at 2.019 million, 5 fils at 1.123 million and one fils at 12,700 dinars.

Compared with December 2025, the Central Bank’s cash, accounts, bonds, certificates of deposit, treasury bills and foreign-currency deposits declined by about 2.417 billion dinars, or 22.3 percent, from 10.833 billion dinars.

Local banks’ accounts and deposits with the Central Bank recorded the sharpest decline, falling by 2.353 billion dinars, or 48.5 percent, from 4.848 billion dinars at the end of December to 2.495 billion dinars at the end of August.

Government accounts also declined by about 95 million dinars, or 6.9 percent, to 1.276 billion dinars from 1.371 billion dinars at the end of 2025.

Meanwhile, currency in circulation increased by 48 million dinars, or about 2.5 percent, from 1.931 billion dinars at the end of December to 1.979 billion dinars at the end of August.
