Araghchi in Russia, seeks strategic alignment as war pressures mount

Abbas Araghchi arrived in St. Petersburg on Monday for high-level talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing the visit as a “good opportunity” to discuss the latest developments in the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the United States.

The visit comes at a critical juncture, with diplomatic channels between Tehran and Washington largely stalled. Araghchi’s trip underscores Moscow’s growing importance as a key strategic ally for Iran amid escalating regional tensions and mounting international pressure.

According to Iranian officials, discussions between Araghchi and Putin are expected to focus on coordinating bilateral engagement and advancing joint initiatives across regional and global arenas, Al-Jazeera reports.

The talks are also likely to address the broader geopolitical implications of the ongoing conflict and potential avenues for de-escalation.

Prior to his arrival in Russia, Araghchi embarked on an intensive diplomatic tour, holding meetings with key mediators in Pakistan and Oman. He also conducted a series of calls with counterparts in Egypt, France, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, reflecting Tehran’s efforts to mobilize diplomatic support and explore pathways to reduce tensions.
