Al-Shalfan: 9 Key standards for fostering children’s academic, health, and social development

The Municipal Council member M. Sharifa Al-Shalfan submitted a proposal to the Council President, Abdullah Al-Mahri, on architectural design standards for public schools. Al-Shalfan emphasized the state’s commitment to fostering children’s academic, health, and social development.

Al-Shalfan highlighted that the school urban environment plays a vital role in fostering creativity and meeting students’ needs. She emphasized that schools, as key places that children visit daily, must be designed with the highest standards to nurture and support future generations.

Explaining further, Al-Shalfan outlined 9 architectural design standards for government schools across all levels.

These include sustainable buildings, integration of natural elements, green and educational parks, internal gardens to enhance quality of life and mental health for students and teachers, dedicated play and kindergarten spaces, emphasis on natural lighting in classrooms and learning areas, and improved acoustics to foster an adaptive educational environment.

Al-Shalfan also emphasized about the importance of safety standards for children, highlighting the use of approved materials to create a secure environment tailored to the needs of different age groups.

Additionally, she advocated for the establishment of educational technology standards and the implementation of the Kuwait Code for accessibility.

Al-Shalfan noted that if additional requirements or standards are to be established, they should be done in coordination with the Ministries of Education, Higher Education, the General Organization for Housing Welfare, Child Development Specialists, and other relevant authorities, to create necessary standards to achieve the desired goals.
