Al-Omariya Nursery opens with symbolic prices as Kuwaitis flock to buy seedlings

The Acting Director General of the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fisheries Affairs, Salem Al-Hai, inaugurated the Al-Omariya Nursery for the sale of seedlings, plants, and flowers at symbolic prices, drawing a large turnout from the public.

Engineer Yousef Al-Moussawi, Head of the Al-Omariya Nursery Department, told Al-Rai that the nursery will continue offering seedlings until December 31. He urged visitors to avoid overcrowding, noting that more than 500,000 seedlings have already been provided, with quantities expected to reach one million by the end of the season. “Goodness abounds,” he said, reassuring citizens that ample supplies are available.

Al-Moussawi explained that the nursery has offered 84 varieties of seedlings to the public this year as part of the 2025 winter agricultural season, which includes plants, flowers, and trees. He revealed that the nursery received a large number of visitors interested in gardening on its opening days, achieving sales of 14,000 dinars over two days.

He emphasized the Authority’s commitment to opening the nursery annually to encourage the cultivation of indoor and outdoor plants and the beautification of homes, streets, schools, and public spaces. The nursery operates from Sunday to Thursday, between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.

According to Al-Moussawi, seedling prices range from 50 fils to 3 dinars—among the lowest nationwide. “The most expensive seedling, the grafted jujube tree, costs 3 dinars, while it sells for about 20 dinars in the market,” he said. Prices for roses and other seedlings remain affordable for all, and payment is made electronically through KNET.

He also highlighted the Authority’s ongoing efforts to support schools by providing 50 to 100 seedlings to each institution based on need, in coordination with the Ministry of Education.

“We aim to promote afforestation and strengthen environmental awareness among students,” he said, noting that new schools receive additional quantities.

He pointed out that public parks suffer from mishandling of trees, which cost thousands of dinars annually to maintain, underscoring the importance of agricultural education.

Among the most in-demand varieties this season are Vitex, Moringa, Arak, Sidr, Petal Brush, Halfa, Bohemia, Papyrus Palm, False Jasmine, Sambac, Mint, Basil, and various vegetable bundles. Popular flowers include Vinca, Letonia, and Marigold, while fruit tree seedlings such as pomegranate, lemon, orange, grapes, and berries are also available. Rose varieties include oleander, Damask, and other ornamental species.

Al-Moussawi concluded by reminding the public that quantities of all types will remain available until the end of the season, encouraging residents to take part in greening Kuwait’s landscapes.
