A tanker was hit by three unidentified projectiles while exiting the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire on board, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
UKMTO said the incident occurred about 17 nautical miles (31 km) east of Khasab, Oman. The maritime authority reported that the vessel was struck by three projectiles as it was leaving the strategic waterway. No injuries were reported among the crew, and there was no reported environmental damage, UKMTO said.
British maritime security firm Vanguard later identified the vessel as the Liberian-flagged Senegal Prosperity. According to Vanguard, the projectiles struck the vessel’s port side, engine room and ballast tank, resulting in a communications blackout. The crew was reported to be safe.
The incident occurred near one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints, through which a significant volume of global oil and energy shipments passes. Authorities have not publicly identified the source of the projectiles or established who was responsible for the attack. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
