Kuwait Customs seizes subsidized food supplies bound for Sri Lanka
Milk, flour, rice and pasta found in export containers
Kuwait Customs officers at Shuwaikh Port seized 2,236 items of subsidized and rationed food supplies loaded in six 40-foot containers that were being prepared for export to Sri Lanka, the General Administration of Customs announced.
The containers were intercepted during export procedures before they left the country. An inspection found that they contained subsidized food commodities, prompting Customs to seize the shipments and take the prescribed legal measures.
The seized items include
- 211 cans of subsidized milk
- 349 bags of subsidized flour
- 435 bottles of Dalal oil
- 9 cans of Dalal catering vegetable ghee
- 38 bags of rationed lentils
- 787 packets of rationed pasta
- 49 bags of rationed rice
- 35 bags of subsidized sugar
- 323 cans of rationed tomato paste
Customs offices said the containers belonged to a number of shipping and export companies and were intercepted while completing export procedures at Shuwaikh Port. The administration said the seizure forms part of efforts to safeguard Kuwait’s food security, protect strategic stocks of essential commodities and ensure that subsidized food supplies reach their intended beneficiaries.
The case has been referred to the competent authorities to complete the required procedures in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Kuwait Customs said it would continue tightening controls at the country’s customs ports and taking legal action against attempts to smuggle or illegally export subsidized food commodities.
