A bomb explosion in Damascus has killed five people, according to the latest updates from Syria.
Syrian authorities said at least one suspect was arrested after an explosion struck a crowded cafe area near a courthouse in Damascus, injuring multiple people and triggering a major security response.
According to officials, the blast occurred in a densely populated district of the Syrian capital where thousands of people visit the nearby courthouse daily. The cafe targeted in the attack is known to be frequented by visitors and employees from the court complex, contributing to the high number of casualties, according to Al-Jazeera.
Reports indicated that at least 16 people were injured, with several suffering serious wounds. While the explosion caused significant damage to the cafe and surrounding area, the courthouse itself, located approximately 100 meters away, was not damaged.
Damascus Governor officials confirmed that an improvised explosive device (IED) had been planted inside the cafe. Authorities stated that at least one suspect attempting to flee the scene was pursued and captured shortly after the incident.
Investigations are ongoing to determine who was behind the attack and whether additional suspects are involved. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the incident is linked to terrorism or any banned organization, including Islamic State.
The governor said authorities are working to maintain stability at a time when Syria is attempting to rebuild its economy and strengthen security conditions after years of conflict.
