US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth used a speech marking the 82nd anniversary of D-Day to criticize European migration policies, describing migrant arrivals on Europe’s southern shores as an “invasion.”
Speaking in Normandy, where Allied forces landed during World War II, Hegseth said some European nations had become too complacent about protecting their freedoms and security.
Referring to migrant arrivals in countries such as Spain, Italy, Greece and Bulgaria, he questioned when European governments would take stronger action to address irregular migration, BBC reports.
The remarks reflect the Trump administration’s continued hardline stance on immigration and add to growing transatlantic debate over migration policies. Immigration has become a major political issue across Europe, with several countries witnessing increased support for parties advocating stricter border controls.
