Iran’s ‘destabilizing’ behavior crossed all red lines : GCC chief

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary General Jassem Al-Budaiwi said on Thursday that Iran’s “destabilizing” behavior in the Arabian Gulf has crossed all red lines, emphasizing the need to halt Iran’s blatant aggression to restore security, peace, and stability to the region.

His remarks came during the first briefing to the UN Security Council, which is holding a high level meeting on cooperation between the United Nations and the GCC, chaired by Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al-Zayani, whose country holds the Security Council presidency this month.

Al-Budaiwi reiterated the GCC’s strongest condemnation of the treacherous Iranian attacks, which constitute a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of its member states and the principles of good neighborliness, and a clear breach of international law and the UN Charter.

He affirmed that the Iranian aggression targeted civilian and vital infrastructure, resulting in civilian and military casualties and injuries; acts that cannot be justified under any circumstances.

The GCC Secretary General called on the Security Council to assume its responsibilities to protect waterways and ensure the continuity of international navigation. He stressed the importance of the Security Council issuing a resolution “authorizing the use of all available and necessary means to protect navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, stop attacks on ships, and guarantee freedom of passage.”

Al-Budaiwi also called on the UN Security Council to take all necessary measures to immediately halt Iranian attacks on GCC states and to include them in any talks or agreements with Iran “in a way that contributes to strengthening their security and stability and ensuring that such attacks are not repeated”. – Kuna
