EU-UK talks focus on regional developments and navigation in Strait of Hormuz

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen discussed developments in the Middle East, particularly the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on global economic stability, during a phone call with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday.

Von der Leyen said in a post on X that the two sides discussed challenges related to navigation security in the Strait of Hormuz, condemning Iran’s actions as “putting global economic stability at serious and increasing risk”.

She added that the European Union will work with its international partners to ensure that “freedom of navigation can resume as soon as possible”, given the waterway’s critical importance for global trade and energy security.

Von der Leyen noted that the talks also addressed the upcoming EU-UK Summit, describing it as a key moment to deliver on last year’s commitments and further strengthen the partnership between both sides across multiple strategic areas.
