UK warns against travel to Kuwait as regional tensions escalate
FCDO advises against non-essential travel to Kuwait amid security risks; rising threats and disruptions prompt UK warning

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has advised against all but essential travel to Kuwait, citing heightened regional tensions and security risks linked to ongoing escalation in the Middle East.
The advisory, issued on April 1, 2026, highlights threats from Iran, which has publicly indicated it may target locations associated with the United States and Israel, including businesses, institutions, and facilities.
Travelers are urged to avoid areas near military or security sites and US-linked locations, as attacks on civilian infrastructure — including airports, ports, roads, and energy facilities — continue across the region.
The FCDO also warned that traveling against its advice could invalidate travel insurance.
Safety Measures
British nationals in Kuwait are advised to remain vigilant, follow local authorities’ instructions, monitor media updates, and be prepared to shelter in place if required. Recommended precautions include staying indoors in secure areas away from windows and maintaining emergency supplies such as food, water, and medication.
Travel and Exit Options
Commercial travel remains disrupted. Those choosing to leave Kuwait — at their own risk — can use land border crossings into Saudi Arabia, specifically via Al Salmi (Ar-Ruqi) and Al Nuwaisib (Al-Khafji), subject to having valid travel documents and visas. Travelers must check airline updates and border status before departure.
The Iraq-Kuwait (Safwan) crossing remains closed, and entry into Kuwait from Iraq requires prior coordination with the British Embassy.
Administrative Requirements
Residents requiring exit permits must apply through the Sahel app. If employers refuse without valid legal reasons, individuals can appeal to the Public Authority for Manpower, with embassy support available if needed.
Additional Guidance
British nationals are encouraged to register their presence with UK authorities, sign up for travel alerts, and ensure all travel documents are valid. Special advice is also provided for those traveling on emergency documents or with limited passport validity.
The FCDO emphasized that no travel can be guaranteed safe, urging individuals to carefully assess risks as regional instability continues.
