The Iranian government announced early Sunday a 40-day period of national mourning and a seven-day suspension of official work following the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in an Israeli and US airstrike.
Khamenei, who was also the commander-in-chief of the Iranian armed forces, had held the position of Supreme Leader since 1989.
Tehran and other Iranian cities have been under a large-scale military attack by Israel and the United States since Saturday morning.
