Kuwait’s Al-Othman Mosque wins Gulf Excellence Award; becomes World’s First Heritage Mosque to Earn LEED Gold Certification

The Al-Othman Mosque has been awarded the Gulf Excellence Award for Energy Efficiency and Conservation of Electricity and Water for 2025, marking another milestone for this iconic Kuwaiti landmark — a site that harmoniously blends architectural beauty with spiritual devotion and a legacy of charitable work spanning generations.

The recognition was announced during the Gulf Forum for Rationalizing Electricity and Water, held at the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Center in November 2025.

The event took place under the patronage and presence of Dr. Sabih Abdulaziz Al-Mukhaizeem, Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Minister of Finance, and Acting Minister of State for Economic Affairs.

The late Abdullah Abdul Latif Al-Othman Mosque was honored with the award, presented by the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy and the Rationalization and Subscriber Services Committee of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) General Secretariat.

In a remarkable environmental achievement, the Al-Othman Mosque also received the LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, becoming the first mosque in Kuwait to achieve this distinction and the first heritage mosque in the world to earn such recognition in sustainable building practices.

Speaking at a press conference held at the mosque in Hawalli, Engineer Adnan Abdullah Al-Othman, a member of the trustees’ committee of the late Abdullah Al-Othman’s estate, praised the contributions of state institutions, noting that their support was instrumental in realizing this exceptional success.

He added, “We congratulate the State of Kuwait on this civilizational achievement, which positions the country among the leading nations promoting sustainability in mosque architecture.

The Al-Othman Mosque has evolved beyond being merely a place of worship — it is now a smart, cultural, and environmental landmark, merging faith with innovation, spirituality with sustainability.

It stands as a symbol of Kuwait’s ability to blend authenticity and modernity — a model of heritage preservation and eco-friendly design that continues its legacy of charitable excellence while inspiring a more conscious and prosperous regional future.”
