750 drivers booked for overtaking, obstructing traffic in 24 hours

The General Traffic Department is closely monitoring violations that contribute to congestion and gridlock, such as overtaking in prohibited areas and deliberately blocking traffic.

Statistics from the General Traffic Department showed that 750 violations were recorded on October 1 against drivers who failed to stop correctly, attempted to overtake vehicles halted at intersections or traffic lights, or deliberately obstructed traffic, Al Rai newspaper reported.

Security sources explained that the department closely monitored violations that contribute to congestion and gridlock, such as overtaking in prohibited areas—known as “unauthorized overtaking”—and deliberately blocking traffic. These infractions were detected through control screens and advanced, next-generation traffic cameras.

Sources added that all violations were documented using smart surveillance cameras, ensuring violators cannot evade penalties. The system integrates with mobile police patrols, and violations are recorded, verified, and communicated to offenders via the Sahel app.

They stressed that every violation undergoes review to prevent errors, noting that in serious cases, the driver’s license may be blocked until the infraction is reviewed by the General Traffic Department.
