UNHCR praises Kuwait’s global humanitarian leadership
. . . contributions surpass $465 million

As Kuwait approaches the anniversary of its designation as a “Humanitarian Country,” the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has commended the nation’s exceptional role in global relief efforts.
Representative Nisreen Rabian emphasized that Kuwait never sought the humanitarian title — it was awarded in recognition of the country’s unwavering and impartial support to those in need, free from political agendas, reports Al-Rai daily.
“Kuwait’s partnership with UNHCR spans more than three decades,” Rabian noted, highlighting that the country remains one of the organization’s largest donors, with total contributions exceeding $465.7 million.
She praised Kuwait’s active cooperation in refugee protection, education, vocational training, and integration programs, often implemented in partnership with government bodies, the private sector, and local charities.
Rabian revealed that future plans include visits by high-level UNHCR delegations to Kuwait and the launch of joint projects in the fields of protection, education, and development.
She expressed confidence that Kuwait would continue its leadership as a trusted partner in humanitarian action worldwide.
The UNHCR official also drew attention to the rising global displacement crisis, noting that by the end of 2024, the number of forcibly displaced persons had exceeded 123 million—comprising 42.7 million refugees, 73.5 million internally displaced persons, and 8.4 million asylum seekers.
Despite these unprecedented figures, Rabian warned that severe funding shortfalls threaten the ability to respond to urgent needs.
