US, China push back tariff deadline for 90 days to avoid trade clash

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that Washington will extend its suspension of additional tariffs on Chinese imports for another 90 days, with Beijing confirming reciprocal measures.

The move postpones a potential escalation in the ongoing trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies.

“I have just signed an Executive Order that will extend the tariff suspension on China for another 90 days. All other elements of the agreement will remain the same,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, just hours before the initial pause was set to expire, according to international news agencies.

China’s Commerce Ministry confirmed the extension today, stating it would also suspend additional tariffs on US goods for the same period.

The updated deadline now falls just after midnight on November 10, giving negotiators more time to address key disagreements.

Trump’s order acknowledged that China has taken “significant steps” toward addressing US concerns over trade and security but also stressed that large and persistent trade deficits remain a threat to US national security and the economy. Ongoing talks aim to resolve the lack of reciprocity in economic relations.

“I have a good relationship with President Xi Jinping,” Trump told reporters, adding, “We’ll see what happens.”

Chinese state media reported that Beijing will maintain a 10% tariff and, as outlined in the Geneva joint declaration, will suspend or remove certain non-tariff countermeasures.

The latest extension follows a May agreement that dramatically reduced mutual tariffs from highs of 145% on Chinese goods and 125% on US goods.

Under that truce, US tariffs on Chinese products were brought down to 30%, while China lowered tariffs on American goods to 10%, averting what could have been a severe economic shock.
